Putting in some practise

Established by 'putting doctor', Harold Swash, the school is located in Southport's Royal Clifton Hotel, with the putting green installed in a dedicated, air-conditioned, ground floor room.

The entire 22ft long by 20ft wide nylon putting surface - horizontal for two yards of its length and then rising gradually for the rest of the distance to finish in an almost vertical slope - is mounted on a purpose built wooden frame and has a layout and speed designed to Swash's specifications.

The speed of the surface is regulated by use of a special roller, also provided by Huxley.

The surface has no pin cups, featuring instead above-ground cups which trap and hold a ball if it is on target. If it isn't, the ball rolls back to its starting point.

The school itself includes mirrors on three walls, video and high-speed camera recording of putting actions and a device designed to help users achieve a consistently true putting stroke.
